Stem cells are the body’s repair cells. They help replace damaged tissues, support healing, and maintain healthy organs throughout life. As we age, stem cell numbers and function gradually decline. Scientists have identified several lifestyle factors that appear to support stem cell activity and regenerative health.
It’s important to distinguish between increasing stem cell activity and making unproven claims about dramatically increasing stem cell numbers. Most of the strongest evidence supports healthy lifestyle habits rather than expensive supplements.
Today we’re going to look at nine proven ways to increase stem cell activity.
- Exercise: The Most Consistently Proven Stimulator
Yes, among all lifestyle factors, exercise has some of the strongest evidence for mobilizing stem cells.
Researchers have shown that acute exercise can increase the circulation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Exercise also appears to improve the function of muscle stem cells involved in tissue repair.
The benefits of exercise include improving tissue repair, supporting immune function, enhancing blood vessel growth, and promoting healthy aging. These benefits can be obtained by brisk walking, swimming, cycling, and strength training. During my cancer journey and treatments, I walked 2 miles twice each day during chemotherapy! I now see that this daily exercise regimen implemented by me to lessen stress and anxiety gave me many more benefits than I anticipated.
It’s best to aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, and strength training 2-3 times per week. Any why? Because vigorous exercise mobilizes stem cells.
- Fasting and Intermittent Fasting
Some of the most interesting stem cell research involves fasting. Studies from researchers at the University of Southern California found that prolonged fasting cycles in animals stimulated hematopoietic stem cell regeneration and self-renewal. The research suggests fasting may activate cellular repair pathways while reducing growth-signaling pathways such as IGF-1.
Fasting stimulates cellular cleanup (autophagy), supports stem cell self-renewal, and enhances regeneration following stress. But keep in mind that patients undergoing cancer treatments should only consider fasting after discussing with their oncologist. You must be a healthy weight and not emaciated to engage in any type of fasting. But isn’t it encouraging to know that fasting promotes stem cell function.
- Quality Sleep
Sleep is when much of the body’s repair work occurs. Recent research has shown that sleep deprivation can impair stem cell function, particularly in tissues such as the intestine. Even short periods of poor sleep may reduce regenerative capacity.
We know that it’s best for us to get 7-9 hours sleep each night, keep a consistent sleep schedule, and minimize screen exposure before bed. We must never forget that sleep is when our bodies repair, regenerate, and detoxify. This is why it’s important for us to make sleep a priority and get quality sleep.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fats help regulate inflammation and support healthy cell membranes. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fats include salmon, sardines, mackerel, flaxseeds, and walnuts. Scientists have found that omega-3 fats may help support neural stem cell function and reduce inflammation that can impair regeneration. I use flaxseeds freshly ground in my smoothie almost daily. I also love to eat wild-caught salmon every chance I get.
- Polyphenol-Rich Foods
Polyphenols are natural plant compounds that help protect cells from oxidative stress. And there are many things causing oxidative stress in our world today. Excellent sources of polyphenols include blueberries, pomegranates, green tea, turmeric, and dark chocolate. Yes, I said dark chocolate or cacao. Laboratory studies suggest these polyphenols help preserve stem cell viability and function.
- Vitamin D
Vitamin D receptors are present on many types of stem cells. Therefore, maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may support immune function, stem cell differentiation, and bone marrow function. Sources of vitamin D include sunlight exposure, fatty fish, and fortified food. My family physician told me years ago to take at least 3000 IU vitamin D supplements for my heart. But when my oncologist challenged me to take enough vitamin D to keep my levels at 70 to 90 on the vitamin D blood test, I accepted the challenge. My oncologist said that you can fight cancer and many things better if your vitamin D levels are optimized. I now keep those levels between 70 – 90. My oncologist helps me by ordering the vitamin D blood test yearly. I’ve found that with my weight, if I take about 5000 IU daily, I can stay in the optimal range.
Do you know what your vitamin D levels are? It’s best to know for the sake of your stem cells, heart, and cancer prevention. It also helps with cold, covid and flu prevention. My video on “Optimal Vitamin D levels to Prevent Flu, Colds, Covid, and Cancer” will be referenced below.
- Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
High blood sugar can damage stem cells through oxidative stress and inflammation. Therefore, it’s best to limit sugary beverages, reduce ultra-processed foods, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise regularly. All these things help keep our blood sugar balanced and support overall regenerative health. My video on “Eight Tips for Balancing Blood Sugar Levels” will be referenced below.
- Reducing Chronic Inflammation
Inflammation is helpful during healing, but chronic inflammation can impair stem cell function. Common causes of chronic inflammation include smoking, obesity, chronic stress, poor diet, and a sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, a regular exercise routine, adequate, deep sleep, and eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and healthy fats is key.
- Stress Management
Chronic stress elevates cortisol and inflammatory signals that can negatively affect regenerative processes. However, helpful practices such as prayer and meditation, nature bathing, deep breathing, exercise, and social interaction and relationships all reduce chronic stress levels.
Research on stress and cellular aging suggests that long-term stress may accelerate biological aging and impair tissue repair. We don’t want to allow that to happen. We must learn to manage the stress that comes our way because stress is a part of life.
God designed the body with remarkable self-repair mechanisms. Exercise, rest, wholesome food, and wise habits help support those natural healing processes. The strongest evidence for supporting healthy stem cell function comes from exercise, sleep, appropriate fasting, omega-3 fats, polyphenol-rich foods, vitamin D, blood sugar control, reduced inflammation, and stress management. Modern research increasingly confirms that emotional well-being, stress reduction, and healthy relationships contribute to physical health.
The goal is not simply to “increase stem cells” but to create an environment where the body’s natural repair systems can function optimally.
